SWSS Statement on NUS NEC Motion “No Apologies for Rape Apologists”

We, like many others in the student movement, were disgusted and appalled by the comments made about rape in connection with the Julian Assange case by Tony Benn, George Galloway, and others. Statements undermining rape or rape victims are not exclusive only to the Assange case. They take place in the context of the “Lad” culture on university campuses, with “Lads” magazines and websites like Unilad that consistently glorify, joke about or dismiss rape. Clearly, the student movement must make a stand over these issues.

As a number of groups across Britain will be holding meetings on Assange and wikileaks over the next week(s), SWSS has produced a meeting leaflet template (Click on the photo for pdf). Given that there are huge debates around the issue SWSS activists should approach Feminist societies and others to hold a joint meeting or come and discuss with us.

Freshers fairs update

 

School & FE

As the new term begins, SWSS will want to hit the ground running in schools and colleges around the country. Two national demonstrations are being organised for the next term, one by the Trade Union Congress (20th October) and the other by the National Union of Students (21st November).

The 2 demonstrations give us a great opportunity to agitate where we study and give a focus to the anger that students feel over cuts of EMA and rise in fees by the government, the victimisation by the police, and much more.

Print out the leaflet and distribute it to students, staff and teachers in your school or college, and start building the resistance from the beginning of the term.

Freshers’ Fair Publicity

The new academic year is around the corner. Universities around the country will hold freshers’ fairs and welcome a new generation of students. This is a great opportunity for socialists to meet hundreds of new activists.

So far SWSS is holding stalls in over 50 universities and colleges. If you would like to set up a SWSS stall were you are, or want to order publicity (check it here and here), drop us an email at swss@swp.org.uk.
